In this article written for the Academy of Fine Arts, I discuss the graphic novel Habibi and reflect on my roots as a Maronite Christian from Lebanon. Habibi, created by Craig Thompson, is a beautifully illustrated and deeply moving story that explores themes of love, faith, and survival in a richly detailed Middle Eastern setting. The novel intertwines poetic storytelling with striking visuals to shed light on cultural and religious complexities. The illustrations by Lorenza Ferrara add a unique artistic dimension to the narrative, enhancing its emotional depth and visual impact. Through this article, I also share how my personal heritage connects with the powerful themes presented in Habibi, offering a meaningful perspective on identity and belonging.
